Hi all! Just found Downbelow last week and have been consuming it rapidly. Listening to Grail as I type this, but saw this was your most recent episode and just HAD to say something.

Into the Fire is one of my all time favorite episodes of television. The scene with Londo and Morden sets this episode over the top for me. First with Londo’s “Do not move!” and has the guards blast the shadows he now knows are flanking Morden. Then when Londo turns around with that trigger “Actually, now that you mention it…” my entire family was cheering. No hessitation, no remorse. He is going to do anything it takes to try and save his world from the flame. After the episode was over we immediatly rewound the tape and watched that scene several times over. And Vir gets his little wave. Fantastic.

Keep up the good work and hopefully iw ill catch up to your current episodes soon. I especialy like the commentary episodes.

It’s good to have the podcast back. I’m not sure whether the recording schedule is still the same, and so don’t know how many episodes ahead of the release schedule you are. But I wanted to comment on something that you said in this episode, anyway, so no chance of spoilers.

The command staff have now let the ambassadors know the backstory behind why the pace accelerates so much in S4 – JMS believed that he would have to wrap the story up in one year. I’m curious as to how Heidi and Elizabeth are finding the faster pace and more serialized storytelling that resulted from this.

For myself, there was the big difference between how I reacted as a viewer at the time and how I reacted when I rewatched S4 about a year and a half ago. When I first watched this, it seemed horribly rushed. I remember in particular being disappointed with Into the Fire: not because of the episode itself, but because JMS had resolved the Shadow War plotline so early in the season.

But when I rewatched it almost 20 years later, l loved the pace of S4. As Ian noted, it’s like TV nowadays normally is. S2 will always have a special place in my heart, and S3 is probably still the strongest season in terms of average episode quality – but S4 might now be my favorite.

So what do Heidi and Elizabeth think?
