    [Spoilers for Shadow Dancing]

    Look! Franklin hates Franklin, too!

I’ll be curious to hear the predictions this week, because JMS said (in comments preserved, as always, in the spoilerunctilious Lurker’s Guide) that he wrote this episode to make what happens in the season finale hard to predict by getting the big space battle out of the way now.

Aside from that, Shadow Dancing is really all about that ending. One of the interesting things about B5 is that, although he’s telling an overall story with a lot of continuity from episode to episode, JMS doesn’t go in all that much for cliffhangers, preferring instead to end every episode with a short coda that imparts a sense of closure. Even the sequence of episodes in which the station breaks away from Earth in the middle of season three is made up of individual stories, one per episode. Traditional cliffhangers are confined to ad breaks.

Except here, which adds to the impact. We’re not used to Babylon 5 episodes ending this way. Another interesting touch is that this cliffhanger isn’t your classic SF adventure-story cliffhanger which puts a main character in danger. (See every single story in classic Doctor Who.) Instead, it’s a cliffhanger which is reminiscent of soap opera, not quite what one would expect from B5.

But hey: now Heidi and Elizabeth have an episode which *ends* with someone from a main character’s past arriving on the station.
