One Response to “Episode 084 – Interludes and Examinations”

  1. Voord 99 Says:

[Spoilers for War Without End & Walkabout]

War Without End: Everyone thinks that this is one of the series’ triumphs, and everyone is right. WWE had to pull off something really formidable. It didn’t just have to be a satisfying counterpart to Babylon Squared. It didn’t just have to adjust everything implied in Babylon Squared to suit a series in which Sinclair was no longer the central character, and make it all seem seamless. It also had to manage to find an ending for Sinclair that would work as the conclusion to the story of a character whose story had once pretty much been the story of the whole show. And WWE had to be a good story in itself, which it is.

On top of that, JMS piles on stuff that doesn’t have to be in this pair of episodes. We finally get the details about what’s really going on in Londo’s vision of his future death from all the way back in Midnight on the Firing Line, and it simultaneously satisfies as the conclusion to that little piece of business as well as providing a whole host of other details about the future that give impetus to the story of B5 as a whole from this point on. Also, the ambassadors have communicated their frustration with the slow pace of the Sheridan-Delenn relationship, but for me, it was worth it to hold the first kiss back to this particular context.

It’s between War Without End and Severed Dreams for my second-favorite story of the whole series.

Walkabout: Not as good as War Without End.
