  1. Voord 99 Says:

[Spoilers for And the Rock Cried Out, No Hiding Place]

For me, it’s an indication of just how good season three is that this isn’t my favorite episode in the season. Because I *love* And the Rock Cried Out, No Hiding Place.

The episode has its flaws. It only gets away with the twist in which G’Kar and Londo turn out to be working together because the scenes in which that was arranged take place offscreen. It’s very hard to imagine a conversation between the two, given what we know their relationship to be, that would be sufficient to persuade G’Kar to trust Londo enough to go along with this.

But who cares? This is one of the great moments in the overall story of Londo, who for me is B5’s most compelling character. It’s also a great moment for Vir. And one shouldn’t forget about the Sheridan story, which finds another twist on the trick of showing how Sheridan’s status as Heroic Space Captain – in this case his ability always to find a way to win – is close to making him the villain of the story.

Plus, AtRCO, NHP contains what is probably the most effective televisual sequence in B5. SF TV from the ’90s, and B5 is not really an exception to this as a rule, is pretty straightforward as television: it’s meat-and-potatoes storytelling that gets the job done, but there aren’t all that many things that strike one as memorable things to do in and of themselves. But Refa being savagely beaten to death, intercut with scenes of worship, all to the tune of a peppy and uplifting gospel number: I don’t think I’ll ever forget that.
