[Spoilers for A View from the Gallery]

I don’t remember what I thought of this episode when it first aired. But when I rewatched last year, I realized that I loathed it. It’s probably my single least favorite episode of Babylon 5.

It’s not that it doesn’t have good things in it. The sequence with Byron and the telepaths may be the most effective use of those characters in the season. It’s not that I don’t like this kind of episode. I can very much enjoy stories which use the trick of showing us our familiar characters from the perspective of other characters, as if it were their show. Someone in the podcast will probably bring up the TNG episode Lower Decks. I don’t actually like TNG all that much, but that’s an episode that I remember liking more than most.

What really bothers me about AVftG is the hero-worship. AVftG comes across to me as the story of how the little ordinary people should admire and genuflect before the wonderful heroic people who are in the main cast – how lucky they are to have those people to lead and protect them, and by extension how lucky we the viewers, for whom Mack and Bo stand in, are to have JMS to make this wonderful show for us. It’s smug and self-congratulatory. I hate it.
