[Spoilers for Babylon Squared]
I’m really, really curious to see what the ambassadors’ reactions are to this one. In fact, now that I think about it, I’d rather have had a commentary on this than AVitW 2. I should have thought to request that. Predictions this week should certainly have stuff to work with.
From a storytelling perspective, Babylon Squared might be the most important episode of season one. As I’ve said before, I think that first-season B5 is cautious about being too different from previous SF shows (with TNG being, as usual, the touchstone). It’s an episodic “problem of the week” show with static setting and mostly static characters.
Even the episodes that build the overall story significantly do so as a secondary element in stories that have distinct plots of their own. Signs and Portents is the nearest exception to this, but it still centers upon its own story about the raiders and the Eye.
Babylon Squared, on the other hand, is almost plotless if you take it by itself. The action boils down to “They go to Babylon 4, and then they leave.” It doesn’t offer the viewer any satisfactions that aren’t about paying off one ongoing mystery and planting more for the future.
