[Spoilers for The Quality of Mercy and Babylon Squared.]

Re: tachyons in Babylon Squared. One thing that is absolutely marvelous here is that I think that this is the first time in the entire show that they’ve referred to a particle, and it’s a real one! B5’s restraint when it comes to technobabble is one of its virtues. It’s a shame that when they do need a bit of technical explanation in the very next episode, they resort to “life energy”…

The Lurker’s Guide (which is indeed spoilerrific) informs that The Quality of Mercy was originally going to be called The Resurrectionist. This has a schlocky penny-dreadful ring to it that I think I prefer to a slightly hackneyed Shakespeare reference that maybe comes across (just a little) as if JMS scanned a dictionary of quotations under the heading “Mercy.”

But maybe someone who is more invested in The Merchant of Venice than me can point to some profound connection that will make me feel better? There is, I suppose, the thematic importance of debts and life. The killer must be mindwiped to repay his debt to society. Dr. Rosen’s machine can only give life in an exact accounting in which it is transferred. Even the Lennier and Londo comedy subplot works.

Now that I think about it, that detail is not from the spoilertastic Lurker’s Guide, but from Wikipedia. So it may not be true. But it should be.
